First Decade Free

September 2026 marked a special milestone for artist Mr. Wash: ten years since he was granted clemency from a life sentence by President Obama.

I’ve been honored to walk beside Wash since I met him at the end of 2016 while writing a story on Obama’s clemency initiative as he was leaving office. It felt like such a sweet moment to now be leading Mr. Wash’s special projects and program and produce his First Decade Free, in partnership with his eldest daughter, Bayon.

Our main event was a celebration at HVW8 Gallery, featuring a special presentation of paintings, with support from Vans, Red Bull, and African Beers.

We collaborated with likeminded collective Supervsn to create a special one-off t-shirt commemorating the occasion, supported by Pro Club. Proceeds went to building the Art By Wash Studio & Community Center.

Earlier, we also kicked off Wash’s First Decade Free with a meaningful talk at the Philosophical Research Society reflecting on the past 10 years between himself and artist Tala Madani. Tala was was responsible for introducing Wash to Jeffrey Deitch.

After ten years, Mr. Wash has become family. It was an honor to be part of the team celebrating him the way he deserves!
